Easel & Estate: A Day of Outdoor Art at the Hermitage

Celebrate art, history, and the beauty of spring during this full-day plein air (outdoor painting) event at The Hermitage. Guests will have the opportunity to capture the estate’s historic architecture, landscapes, and gardens while learning from artists throughout the day. Many of the day’s activities—including artist demonstrations, the Plein Air Talk, and the Sidewalk Chalk Contest—are included with regular admission to the site. Plein air workshops require a separate ticket. Partnership: The Hermitage is partnering with The Chestnut Group, a collective of experienced artists specializing in plein air painting. Artists from the group will paint across the property throughout the day, demonstrate their techniques, and share inspiration with visitors. Artist Demonstrations: Chestnut Group artists will paint across the property throughout the day, offering informal demonstrations and engaging with visitors as they work. Plein Air Talk: 12:30 PM – 1:00 PM A short presentation from a Chestnut Group representative on plein air techniques, inspiration, and painting historic landscapes. Sidewalk Chalk Contest (All Ages): Themes: Spring at the Hermitage or Historic Scenes Age Categories: - 6 & under - 7–10 - 11–14 - 15–18 - Adult Prizes will be awarded in each category. Participants should bring their own chalk. Judging will begin at 3:00 PM, and winners will be announced on social media at 4:00 PM. Plein Air Painting Workshops: Guests who would like a more hands-on experience can participate in one of our small-group plein air painting workshops. Two workshop sessions will be offered: - Morning Session: 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM - Afternoon Session: 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM Each session is limited to 10 participants to allow for personalized instruction. Workshop tickets include access to The Hermitage grounds for the day. The Hermitage will provide most materials, and beginners are encouraged to attend—no prior painting experience is required. Workshops require a separate ticket.
